Sad news came from India this week. Nana Patekar, one of the most respected actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema, has died. He was 75 years old. In this post I will explain what happened, who he was, and why so many people loved his work. I will keep the words simple so that everyone can follow.
What happened?
Nana Patekar died on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at his home in the state of Goa in western India.
India’s news agency, Press Trust of India, reported that the cause was a suspected cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest means the heart suddenly stops working properly. The agency said a doctor at the hospital where he was taken confirmed that he had passed away.
He is survived by his wife and his son.
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, paid tribute to him on X (the social media site). He said Nana Patekar brought great variety and creativity to every role, and that he gave audiences characters people will remember for generations.
Who was Nana Patekar?
His real name was Vishwanath Patekar. He was born on January 1, 1951, in a place called Murud-Janjira, which was then part of Bombay State in India. He studied at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts, an art college, before becoming an actor.
He worked mainly in Hindi and Marathi films. In 1978 he married Neelkanti Patekar. In 2013, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, one of the country’s important civilian awards.
He also had a link with the Indian Army. He held the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and his army connection lasted from 1990 to 2013.
His best-known work
Nana Patekar was famous because he could play very different kinds of people. Here are some of the roles that people remember most.
- Salaam Bombay! This film was made by director Mira Nair and was nominated for an Oscar. It helped him become known to audiences outside India as well.
- Krantiveer (1994). This was a powerful film about a man who fights against wrong things in society. His performance won him Best Actor honours, including a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award.
- Ghulam-E-Mustafa. He starred with Raveena Tandon in this crime drama, playing a hired killer named Mustafa.
- Abhay (1994). This is a children’s film in which he played a ghost.
- Hum Dono (1995). He worked with the late actor Rishi Kapoor in this film.

- Ab Tak Chhappan 2. He played police Inspector Sadhu Agashe, who is part of a Mumbai police team that fights criminals.
- Ole Aale (2024). In this Marathi film, he played a father named Omkar. Critics in Marathi newspapers praised his acting.
Why will people remember him?
Look at the list above. In one film he is an angry fighter, in another he is a funny gangster, in another a serious politician, and in another even a ghost. Very few actors can do so many different things and still make every character feel real. That is exactly what the Prime Minister meant when he spoke about the variety in his roles.
He was also linked with an organisation called the Naam Foundation.
