Six times before, Apple touched this height during the day — and six times, it slipped back before the closing bell. On Wednesday, the seventh try held. When trading ended in New York, the iPhone maker was worth more than $5 trillion, and only one company in history had ever finished a day up there before it.

That company is Nvidia, the chip giant. Apple is now the second name in that very small club, according to The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and MacRumors, which all reported the same closing figures.

What exactly happened on Wednesday?

Apple shares rose 0.5 percent on Wednesday 14 October and closed at $342.96, a record closing high. That price gave the whole company a market value of $5.005 trillion, based on Dow Jones Market Data reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Market value, in simple words, is what the stock market says the whole company is worth: the share price multiplied by the number of shares. Cross $5 trillion during the day is one thing. Still being above it when the bell rings is the part that counts for the record books — and Apple had never managed that part before, despite crossing the line six times during trading hours.

During Wednesday’s session the shares climbed as high as $347.07, close to their all-time high of $348.15, The Apple Post reported.

Why this day was harder than it looked

Wednesday was not an easy day to shine. The wider market fell, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped about 1.9 percent, Barron’s reported. Big technology names including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Alphabet all finished lower.

Apple went the other way. Analysts quoted in the reports say investors treat Apple as a safe place to park money when markets shake, because its business is steady and easy to predict. Barron’s noted Apple’s shares are now up about 26 percent this year, compared with about 13 percent for the S&P 500 index.

The milestone also came less than a year after Apple first closed above $4 trillion, which shows how fast the number has grown in just twelve months.

The end of one era, the start of another

This record lands at a changing moment for the company. Tim Cook’s 15 years as chief executive ended on 31 August, and John Ternus has now been in charge for just over a month, MacRumors reported.

Cook’s record, as summed up by The Wall Street Journal, is the mountain the new boss has to climb. Under Cook, Apple’s market value grew about 13 times over. Yearly iPhone sales nearly quadrupled. The services business — things like app sales, music, TV and storage — grew from about $10 billion a year to more than $100 billion a year. The Apple Watch and AirPods, both launched in his time, together bring in more than $30 billion a year. And the company handed back more than $1 trillion to its shareholders through buybacks and dividends.

How did Apple get here while rivals spend big on AI?

One reason investors keep trusting Apple, the reports say, is what it did not do. While rival technology giants pour huge sums into AI data centres, Apple has kept its own spending much lower and stayed focused on devices and the high-profit services sold with them.

That careful style protected its profits while others spent. Whether it can last is the open question, because the AI race is not slowing down, and Apple’s own new AI features will be judged against rivals who spent far more.

What comes next?

Two tests are very close. First, pre-orders open on Friday 16 October for the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, with the phone reaching buyers on 23 October. Barron’s reported it is the most expensive iPhone ever launched, starting at $1,999 — so its sales will be watched as a sign of whether customers still accept Apple’s rising prices.

Second, Apple’s next earnings report will show whether demand for its newest phones is strong enough to hold this value, and how rising component costs are affecting the company, The Apple Post noted.

Nvidia still sits above Apple, worth about $5.3 trillion, so Apple is second, not first. But a club that had one member on Tuesday has two members today — and that is why a single day’s closing price made history.
