A small boy in a tiny house with a tin roof had almost nothing. No money, no famous name, and at 15, a heart problem that could have ended his dream before it even started.
That boy is Cristiano Ronaldo. Today the whole world knows his face. This is his full life story, from the start to today, in simple words.
Cristiano Ronaldo Childhood and Family
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on 5 February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira, a small island of Portugal.
He was the youngest of four children. His mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, worked as a cook and a cleaner. His father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, worked as a gardener and also helped as a kit man at a local football club.
Money was very tight at home. The family lived in a small house, and life was a daily struggle. Football became the boy’s whole world very early. He played in the streets and with local teams whenever he could.
He has one older brother, Hugo, and two older sisters, Elma and Liliana Catia. His family stayed close to him through every hard year that followed.
The Struggle Years of Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo first played for local team Andorinha, where his father helped with the kits. He then spent two years at Nacional.
In 1997, at just 12 years old, he moved to Sporting CP in Lisbon after a trial. Leaving Madeira meant leaving his mother and family behind. It was a lonely time, and he missed home badly.
Then came a bigger scare. At 15, doctors found he had a racing heart problem, a form of tachycardia. He had surgery to fix it. The operation worked, and he was soon back training. His career could easily have ended there — instead, it was only starting.
How Cristiano Ronaldo Became Famous
Ronaldo made his senior debut for Sporting CP at 17 in 2002.
In 2003, Sporting played a friendly against Manchester United. The young Ronaldo played so well that United signed him soon after. Under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, he grew from a skillful teenager into a world star.
In his first spell at Manchester United, from 2003 to 2009, he won three Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008, and his first Ballon d’Or in 2008.
In 2009, he joined Real Madrid for a then world-record fee. In Madrid he became a goal machine, stayed nine years, and won four more Champions League titles. His long rivalry with Lionel Messi pushed both players to an amazing level.
He later played for Juventus in Italy from 2018 to 2021, returned to Manchester United in 2021, and in January 2023 moved to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he still plays as captain in 2026.
Cristiano Ronaldo Records and Biggest Wins
Ronaldo has won five Ballon d’Or awards in total — in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
He is the top scorer in Champions League history and the top scorer in men’s international football. For Portugal, his biggest moment came at Euro 2016, when Portugal won its first major trophy. Portugal also won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025.
His famous number 7 shirt gave him his well-known name, CR7.
Cristiano Ronaldo Partner and Children
Ronaldo’s partner is Georgina Rodriguez. They met in 2016 in Madrid, and she has been by his side through his moves to Italy, England and Saudi Arabia.
Ronaldo is a father of five living children. His eldest son, Cristiano Jr., was born in 2010. In June 2017, twins Eva and Mateo were born. Later in 2017, Georgina gave birth to their daughter Alana Martina.
In April 2022, the family faced its saddest day. Georgina gave birth to daughter Bella Esmeralda, but Bella’s twin brother, Angel, died at birth. The couple shared their grief openly, and the family still remembers him.
Cristiano Ronaldo Net Worth
Ronaldo has been at the top of Forbes lists of the highest-paid footballers and athletes for many years, with large earnings from his Al-Nassr salary, a lifetime Nike deal and other endorsements, plus his CR7 brand of hotels, gyms, clothing and fragrances.
In October 2025, reports based on Bloomberg estimates described him as football’s first billionaire, with an estimated net worth of around $1.4 billion, while Forbes reporting in the same period again placed him first among the world’s highest-paid footballers. These are reported estimates, not exact figures.
Hard Times in Cristiano Ronaldo’s Life
His father’s drinking was a pain the family lived with for years. Jose Dinis Aveiro died in 2005, when Ronaldo was only 20, so he never saw most of his son’s greatest wins.
His second spell at Manchester United also ended in a difficult way in late 2022, after a public fall-out with the club, before his move to Saudi Arabia.
And nothing was harder than losing his newborn son Angel in 2022, a loss he and Georgina have spoken about with great honesty.
Where Cristiano Ronaldo Is Today
Today Ronaldo lives in Saudi Arabia with Georgina and their children and plays for Al-Nassr. He is 41 years old, still scoring, still training with the same famous discipline, and still captain of Portugal.
A poor boy from Madeira became one of the most famous sportsmen on Earth. His story is not only about talent. It is about work, family, and never stopping — even after heart surgery, poverty and deep personal loss.
