In the last week of 2008, one man was days away from losing everything. His rocket company had failed three times. His car company was almost out of money. He had put nearly all his own fortune into both.

That man is Elon Musk. A few days later, one rocket launch and one NASA contract changed his life forever. This is his full life story, from the start to today, in simple words.

Elon Musk Childhood and Family

Elon Reeve Musk was born on 28 June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa.

His father, Errol Musk, is a South African engineer. His mother, Maye Musk, was born in Canada and worked as a model and dietitian. Elon is the eldest of three children — he has a younger brother, Kimbal Musk, born in 1972, and a younger sister, Tosca Musk, born in 1974.

His parents divorced when he was still a young boy, in 1980, and for much of his childhood he lived mainly with his father.

Elon was a quiet child who loved books and computers. He was bullied badly at school in Pretoria. In one attack, a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs and beat him so badly that he was taken to hospital.

At the age of 10, he became interested in computing on a Commodore VIC-20 home computer and taught himself to program. At just 12, he created a video game called Blastar and sold its code to a computer magazine for about $500. It was his first small proof that ideas in his head could become real money.

Elon Musk attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School and later Pretoria Boys High School. In 1988, after obtaining a Canadian passport through his Canadian-born mother, he left South Africa. Britannica notes that he did not want to support apartheid through compulsory military service, and he wanted the bigger economic opportunities of North America.

The Struggle Years of Elon Musk

Elon Musk started university at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. In 1992 he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, where he completed bachelor’s degrees in physics and economics in 1997.

In 1995 he moved to California to begin graduate studies in physics at Stanford University — and left after only two days. He believed the young internet would change society far more than physics research, and he wanted to build companies instead.

That same year, with his brother Kimbal, he founded Zip2, a company that gave online newspapers maps and business directories. The brothers started with very little money and worked day and night on the business.

How Elon Musk Became Famous

In 1999, computer maker Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 million. Elon Musk was suddenly a millionaire, but he did not stop or settle down.

He founded an online financial services company called X.com. It later became PayPal, the service that made sending money online simple. In 2002, eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion. Musk became an American citizen in 2002 as well.

Most people would have retired rich. Instead, Musk took almost all the money he had made and put it into two of the riskiest ideas on Earth: rockets and electric cars. That decision is the real turning point of the Elon Musk life story.

SpaceX and the Dream of Mars

Elon Musk had long believed that for human life to survive in the long term, people must become a multiplanet species. He was unhappy with how expensive rocket launches were, so in 2002 he founded Space Exploration Technologies — SpaceX — to build cheaper rockets.

Its first rocket, Falcon 1, was first launched in 2006. The bigger Falcon 9 followed in 2010, and Falcon Heavy in 2018. Over time, the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy came to dominate the launch market, and Britannica reports that in 2024 more than half of the world’s orbital launches were done by SpaceX.

SpaceX also built the Dragon spacecraft, which carries supplies and astronauts to the International Space Station. In 2020, Dragon carried astronauts Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken to the station in a crewed flight — a first for a private company.

The company also built Starlink, a huge network of satellites that provides internet service around the world. The first batch of Starlink satellites was launched in May 2019, and Britannica reports there were 9,633 active Starlink satellites as of January 2026 — more than half of all active satellites.

Above all of this sits Starship, the giant reusable rocket system SpaceX is developing for trips between cities on Earth and, one day, for bases on the Moon and Mars.

Tesla and the Electric Car Story

Elon Musk had also been interested in electric cars for years. In 2004 he became one of the major funders of Tesla Motors, an electric car company founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, and he later became its chief executive.

Tesla’s first car, the Roadster, arrived in 2006. It could travel 245 miles (394 km) on a single charge and reach 60 mph in less than four seconds — a sports car, not the slow, dull electric cars people expected.

Tesla went public in 2010, raising about $226 million. The Model S sedan came in 2012 and won wide praise, the Model X SUV followed in 2015, and the cheaper Model 3 went into production in 2017 and became the best-selling electric car of all time. The angular Cybertruck pickup entered limited production in late 2023.

In November 2025, Tesla shareholders approved a historic new pay package for Musk that could be worth up to $1 trillion in stock over the next decade — but only if he meets very ambitious targets, including growing Tesla’s market value to about $8.5 trillion.

Hard Times in Elon Musk’s Life

The year 2008 was the darkest year of Elon Musk’s life.

SpaceX had tried to launch Falcon 1 three times — in 2006, 2007 and August 2008 — and all three attempts failed. The company was almost out of money, and Musk had said the fourth launch was the last one SpaceX could pay for.

At the same time, Tesla was burning cash and was close to collapse, and Musk was also going through his divorce from his first wife that year.

On 28 September 2008, the fourth Falcon 1 launch finally reached orbit — the first privately funded liquid-fuel rocket to do so. On 23 December 2008, NASA awarded SpaceX a $1.6 billion contract to carry cargo to the space station. Days later, around Christmas Eve, Tesla’s investors provided the emergency money that kept the car company alive. In one week, both companies were saved.

Hard times did not end there. In August 2018, Musk posted on social media that he was considering taking Tesla private at $420 a share and had “funding secured.” The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued him, saying the posts were false and misleading. The settlement that followed required Musk to step down as Tesla’s chairman for three years, have his company-related posts preapproved by Tesla lawyers, and pay fines of $20 million each for Tesla and for Musk personally.

Later public chapters also brought criticism: his purchase of Twitter, his time in government (below), and his public fallout with President Donald Trump in 2025 all kept Elon Musk in the middle of heated debate.

Elon Musk Wife and Children

Elon Musk has been married three times — once to Canadian author Justine Wilson, and twice to British actress Talulah Riley.

He married Justine Wilson in 2000. They had six children together. Their first son, Nevada Alexander, died suddenly at just 10 weeks old, a loss that has been widely reported. Musk and Wilson divorced in 2008.

He married Talulah Riley in 2010, they divorced in 2012, remarried in 2013, and finalised their second divorce in 2016.

Musk also has children with Canadian musician Grimes, with whom he has three children, and with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink, and other children have been reported in 2025. In total, reporting in 2026 identifies at least 14 children of Elon Musk.

Elon Musk is not currently married.

In 2021, while hosting the comedy show Saturday Night Live, Musk said publicly that he has Asperger’s syndrome — one of the first times a person of his fame had spoken about it on live television in that way.

Twitter, X, AI and Other Companies

Elon Musk joined Twitter in 2009 and became one of its most followed accounts. In April 2022 he bought a large stake in the company, then made an offer to buy it completely for $44 billion. After trying to withdraw from the deal and being sued by Twitter, he completed the purchase in October 2022.

As owner, he laid off about half the staff, changed how accounts are verified, and reinstated a number of banned accounts, including that of Donald Trump. Advertising revenue fell sharply. In July 2023, he renamed Twitter to X.

Artificial intelligence is another big part of his later story. Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, left it in 2018, and sued it in 2024, saying it had moved away from its founding nonprofit mission. In spring 2026, a jury in California ruled against Musk and his claims were dismissed, with the court finding he had waited too long to file the case.

In 2023, nine months after buying Twitter, Musk founded a new AI company, xAI. Its main product is Grok, an AI assistant that competes with ChatGPT and Gemini. In February 2026, it was reported that SpaceX acquired xAI, bringing his AI work under the same umbrella as his rocket company.

His other companies include Neuralink, founded in 2016 to build brain-computer chips — its first human patient, a 29-year-old with quadriplegia, received an implant in early 2024 and could control a computer mouse and play chess by thought — and The Boring Company, founded in late 2016 to dig transport tunnels, whose Las Vegas Loop opened to the public in 2021.

Elon Musk Net Worth

Elon Musk is the world’s richest person, and in 2026 his fortune passed a mark no one had reached before.

In June 2026, SpaceX completed its first public stock offering (IPO), selling shares at $135 each and valuing the company at about $1.77 trillion — the largest IPO in history at the time, according to Britannica. After the shares began trading, Forbes estimates put Musk’s net worth above $1 trillion, making him the first person known to reach that milestone.

The number moves a lot, because almost all of his wealth is shares in his companies, mainly SpaceX and Tesla. Forbes estimated his net worth at about $936 billion on 1 October 2026, while Forbes’ real-time tracker put it at about $1.007 trillion on 13 October 2026. All net worth figures are reported estimates by Forbes and other trackers, not exact amounts published by Musk himself.

Elon Musk in Politics and DOGE

In the 2024 U.S. election, Elon Musk became one of the most prominent supporters of Donald Trump, spending hundreds of millions of dollars through his America PAC supporting Trump and other Republican candidates, Britannica reports.

After Trump returned to office in 2025, Musk became a special government employee and helped lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to cut federal spending and shrink the government workforce. Its actions, including dismantling much of the U.S. foreign aid agency USAID, brought strong controversy and many lawsuits.

Musk stepped down from DOGE in May 2025, after criticising Trump’s big spending bill, saying it would increase the deficit and undermine DOGE’s work. In the weeks that followed, Musk and Trump publicly criticised each other, and Trump threatened to revoke government contracts held by Musk’s companies.

Where Elon Musk Is Today

Today Elon Musk is 55 years old, lives in the United States, and still leads Tesla and SpaceX.

Time magazine named him its Person of the Year for 2021. In September 2026, a nearly four-hour documentary about him by filmmaker Alex Gibney premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, which Musk criticised and declined to be interviewed for.

In October 2026, Reuters reported that Musk would return to an official advisory role in the Trump government, co-leading a Pentagon study called Project Meridian on the future of warfare, alongside Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich.

A bullied schoolboy from Pretoria who sold a small video game at 12 is now the richest person in the world and the first reported trillionaire — not because every bet worked, but because in his worst week, in 2008, he refused to let either of his companies die.
