In 1991, a 25-year-old young man reached Mumbai with almost nothing. He had no film family, no godfather in Bollywood, and no money to fall back on. Both his parents were gone. In the same year, he got married and signed his first films.

Within a few years, that same young man became the most loved romantic hero in India. Today the world calls him King Khan. This is the full Shah Rukh Khan life story, from the start to today, in simple words.

Shah Rukh Khan Childhood and Family

Shah Rukh Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in New Delhi, India, into a Muslim family.

He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore, where his maternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ahmed, worked as chief engineer of the port.

His father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar. He was a follower of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and was linked with the Indian National Congress. He moved to Delhi around the time of the Partition of India in 1947.

His mother, Lateef Fatima Khan, was a magistrate and the daughter of a senior government engineer. His parents married in 1959.

Shah Rukh Khan has one older sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh, born in 1960. She still lives with his family in Mumbai.

The family later lived in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of Delhi, in rented apartments. His father tried several businesses, including a restaurant, and the family lived a simple middle-class life where money was often tight.

School, Sports and the First Stage

Shah Rukh Khan studied at St. Columba’s School in central Delhi. He was strong in his studies and very good at sports, especially hockey and football, and he received the school’s highest award, the Sword of Honour.

As a boy, he dreamed of a career in sports. A shoulder injury ended that dream early, and it quietly changed his whole future.

Instead, the young Shah Rukh Khan began acting in school and stage plays. He became known for his funny and accurate imitations of famous Bollywood actors, and people around him started to see that this boy belonged on a stage.

He joined Hansraj College, University of Delhi, in 1985 and completed his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1988. Most of his real energy, though, went into theatre. In Delhi’s Theatre Action Group, he learned acting under director Barry John.

After college, he began a master’s degree in mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia, but he left his studies to follow acting full time.

The Struggle Years of Shah Rukh Khan

The hardest part of the Shah Rukh Khan life story came very early.

His father died of cancer in 1981, when Shah Rukh Khan was only 15 years old. His mother carried the family after that, but in 1991 she also died. He was 25, and in a short time he had lost both his parents.

Before films, there was television and rejection. He was not from a film family, he did not look like the typical hero of that time, and Mumbai knew nothing about him.

His first acting work came in television serials in the late 1980s. In Fauji he played a young army commando, and in Circus he played a circus performer. The shows were small, but viewers noticed this fast-talking, energetic young actor straight away.

In 1991, the same year his mother died, Shah Rukh Khan married Gauri Khan and moved to Mumbai to try his luck in Bollywood. It was the biggest gamble of his life.

How Shah Rukh Khan Became Famous

Shah Rukh Khan made his film debut in Deewana in 1992, and the film was an immediate success. In just 1992 to 1994, he had around ten releases, including Chamatkar, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

Then he did something no new hero was supposed to do. He played the villain.

In Baazigar (1993) and Darr (1993), Shah Rukh Khan played dark, obsessed anti-heroes — and audiences loved him even more. These risky roles made him different from every other young star, and Baazigar also began his famous screen partnership with actress Kajol.

In 1995 came the film that changed everything: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, known everywhere as DDLJ. His role as Raj made Shah Rukh Khan the face of romance for a whole generation, in India and among Indians living all over the world.

After that, the hits kept coming — Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Devdas (2002), Swades (2004), Chak De! India (2007) and My Name Is Khan (2010). He could play the lover, the coach, the scientist and the common man, and people believed him in every role.

His open-arms pose from his romantic films became one of the most copied poses in Indian popular culture. A boy from a rented flat in Delhi was now simply called King Khan and the Baadshah of Bollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan Wife and Children

Shah Rukh Khan first met Gauri Chibber in Delhi in 1984, long before fame. They married on 25 October 1991, when he was still a struggling newcomer with no film released.

Gauri Khan is now a well-known film producer and interior designer. Together, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan co-own their production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, which they built from 2002 onwards.

The couple have three children. Their son Aryan Khan was born in November 1997. Their daughter Suhana Khan was born in May 2000. Their youngest son, AbRam Khan, was born in May 2013 through a surrogate mother.

Family is the centre of his life today. Suhana Khan made her acting debut in the Netflix film The Archies, and Aryan Khan has moved into directing — his Netflix series The Ba**ds of Bollywood* arrived in 2025, with his father appearing in a cameo.

The family home in Mumbai, Mannat, is a famous landmark. On Eid and on his birthday, huge crowds gather outside it, and Shah Rukh Khan traditionally comes out to wave to his fans.

Shah Rukh Khan Business and Cricket

Shah Rukh Khan did not depend only on acting fees. With Gauri Khan, he built Red Chillies Entertainment into a major production and visual effects company, which has backed films such as Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om and Jawan.

In 2008, he became a co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Indian Premier League cricket team from Kolkata. The team, known as KKR, became one of the most popular and valuable teams in the league, and the Knight Riders name later grew into more teams in other countries.

He has also been a television host, including one season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and for years he has been one of India’s most trusted faces for big brands.

Hard Times in Shah Rukh Khan’s Life

Fame did not protect Shah Rukh Khan from difficult years.

After a long run of hits, some of his films began to fail. Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) and Zero (2018) performed poorly at the box office. From 2018 to 2023, he stepped away from lead roles and did not carry a film as the main hero for more than four years. Many people began to say the King Khan era was over.

Then came a painful family crisis. In October 2021, his elder son Aryan Khan was arrested during a raid on a cruise ship in a drugs case. Aryan spent nearly a month in jail before he was released on bail. In May 2022, the Narcotics Control Bureau dropped the case against him, saying there was not sufficient evidence, and it was reported that no drugs had been found on him. Aryan was cleared, but those weeks were one of the darkest periods of Shah Rukh Khan’s personal life.

Through all of this, Shah Rukh Khan stayed mostly silent in public and kept his family close. His answer, when it came, was not an interview. It was his work.

The Great Comeback of 2023

In 2023, Shah Rukh Khan returned as a leading man — and broke records.

First came Pathaan, an action thriller in which he played a spy. Then came Jawan, in which he played a double role of father and son, and finally Dunki, the story of people who risk everything to travel abroad through the illegal “donkey flight” route.

Pathaan and Jawan each crossed Rs 1,000 crore at the worldwide box office, and Britannica notes that both are among the ten top-grossing Indian films of all time. In a single year, the man who had been written off delivered three big films and stood at the top again.

In 2025, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan — the first National Award of his long career — sharing the honour with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail. The same year, he made his first appearance at the Met Gala in New York. Time magazine had already listed him among the 100 most influential people of 2023.

Shah Rukh Khan Net Worth

Shah Rukh Khan is reported to be the richest actor in India, and one of the richest actors in the world.

The Hurun India Rich List 2025 placed Shah Rukh Khan and his family at Rs 12,490 crore — about $1.4 billion — taking him into the billionaire bracket for the first time. Reports on that list said the biggest contributor to his wealth is Red Chillies Entertainment, along with his cricket teams and real estate.

The Hurun India Rich List 2026 again placed him first among Indian actors, this time at Rs 10,000 crore. Such figures are estimates that go up and down with the value of his companies and investments; they are reported figures, not an exact amount published by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

For his work in films, India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2005. France honoured him with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Legion of Honour, and over his career he has won 14 Filmfare Awards in total, including a record-sharing eight Best Actor awards.

Where Shah Rukh Khan Is Today

Today Shah Rukh Khan is 60 years old. He will turn 61 on 2 November 2026. He lives in Mumbai with his family and still stands at the centre of Bollywood.

His next film is King, directed by Siddharth Anand. The film co-stars his daughter Suhana Khan in her first theatrical feature film, and it is scheduled for release on 24 December 2026 — a moment many fans are waiting for, because father and daughter will share the big screen as leads for the first time.

A middle-class Delhi boy who lost his father at 15, his mother at 25, and arrived in Mumbai with no connections is now a billionaire superstar honoured by two countries. The Shah Rukh Khan life story is not only about fame. It is about a man who, every time life pushed him down — in his childhood home, in his failing films, and in his family’s darkest month — stood up and started again.
